In this study, the Polylactic acid (PLA)-based membrane is manufactured by electronspinning. The specific characteristics of the nano-fibrous membrane, which has an ultra-high BET surface area with fine and uniform pores, are applied in a high efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter. However, because of the lower strength of nano-fibrous membrane, a new type of HEPA, which combines the spun-bond nonwoven, is devised as a reinforcement material. It is a multi-layer, filterable material, named Spunbond-Electronspun-Spunbond (SES) composite membrane. In this work, the self-build rotating collector of the electron-spinning facility is used to vary the various parameters of the applied voltage, the concentration of the dopants and the internal diameter of the needles. The variation in the morphology of the nano-fibrous membrane, the fiber fineness and the mean distribution of the fiber diameter are observed using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The filtration efficiency of the SES composite membrane is then evaluated using an automated filter tester, TSI 3160. The initial results show that by controlling the experimental parameters a very good SES composite membrane is produced, which removes 99.71% of 0.3 μm airborne particles.
